I purchased a Winchester 94 trapper(16" barrel).

What would you recommend as far as a hunting load for deer. I have used both 240G lead cast flat nosed and 200G JHP in my Ruger Super Blackhawk with 10.5" bull barrel for handgun hunting for deer and have had no problems knocking them down where they stand from my tree stand. Maximum range both times were under 30 yards.

Are either loads acceptable for the 94? This Monday Nov 22nd is opening season for firearms in WV, and will more then likely take a shot between 40-60 yards in a clear fire lane.

The 200grn bullet should be more than adequate for deer at that range and you will find that it will not climb as much as a 240grn round will. I stick to 180 and 200 grain bullets in my .44mag Marlin, never shot a deer with one, but the kill the hell out of wild hogs.

The load I've grown rather fond of for my Anaconda is a 300 grain gas checked LSWC with 20 grains of H110, magnum primer, and firm crimp. I've never used it on deer, but it's hell on milk jugs at 300 meters.

If you hand load I like IMR 4227 powder.

It fills or nearly so the case and can put out some good loads at different powder charges .
