Naah..but they uthanize them after the Kentucky derby.

My question would be why does the 'sport of kings' get a free pass concerning animal abuse?

If I have all the money in the world, and I choose to invest in a thoroughbred, and the horse ends up dead because of my ambitons, why should I not be held accountable for my actions?

My peabrain, stupidity and lack of experience, tells me that a 3 year old philly is too immature to reflect the stndards demanded by a 2 1/2 mile racetrack. Its kind of like watching a 12 year old compete in the olympic ice skating ritual...horses are not full grwon until at least 6-7 years old, yet we all watch and bet and contribute (enabling) the efforts of insane owners paying insane prices for anmimals who do nothing wrong but what comes naturally...

Question becomes who is to blame, system or greedy owners?

Ya don't like horse racing?

I don't watch it or bet on it.

But I could care less one way or the other about those who do watch/wager/make their living by being part of the sport.

So what have you got against putting a horse down that broke both of its front legs and was in terrible pain? It needed to be done and it was. I suppose that you get all worked up over killing animals in a slaughterhouse too. Or are you a vegan?

In case the concept is beyond yer anti-capitalist liberal brain, horse racing is all about two things. Money and prestige.

And so it goes and so it will continue to go whether ya like it or not.

The way you're telling this story you'll have us believe that all horses are put dow after the Kentucky Derby...but i digress....oops, I mean beg to differ. Not too many 3 year old fillies could run out the 2 and a half miles(if thats what the race is). I suspect that most winners of this race would be aged between 4 and 7.

I wonder what has prompted this little bit of animal liberation from our resident liberal. I betcha some leftist news media ran a story on this "tragic" event for ya to get ya knickers in a knot.

Sounds to me like you're running out of things to bitch about, oh well, its your life, if ya could call it that.

Hey Poofter Pete,
I was wondering, and thinking, why you would give a fucking shit about a horse that needed to be put down after breaking down during a god damn horse race when your Canadian cousins are starting their annual Fur Seal cull. I woulda thought your Liberal ass would have been all over this, or don't ya give a shit about those cute little Fur Seals?

Peter Eater only gives a shit about things that affect him personally or that he thinks may become a hot topic if he raises the issue.

I wonder if he gives a flying fuck about the supposedly 14,000 dead in Burma (I refuse to call it by its Kommunist name) and another possible 41,000 missing. I doubt it, but who knows. I sure as shit don't. Fuck 'em.

And so it goes.

OK, so horses are not that big a deal around here....

My point was (for those of you keeping score) was that for whatever reason, horse racing is abusive. Maybe not at the level of the kentucky derby, I'm convinced most of those owners have enough money invested to treat these animals well, but rather how about the local hoosierbilly harness race? Those poor bastards have no options if their horse pulls up lame...shoot em!

So, does making money (or the possibility of making money) justify the antics of putting these animals through the paces of a fanatical workout regime with the very real possibility of death?

Petey,
You obviously have NO idea about the thoroughbred racing industry do ya! A horse has to be put down if it shatters/breaks a leg, not if it pulls up lame. But they do often end up as dog food if they can't be given a new home in the spelling paddocks or something like that. Its the horse's that get bought by families and left unattended on hobby farms that are most at risk from neglect, unlike a race horse that is most likely very well looked after. Anyway, whether you like it or not, some horses don't cut it and some end up dead, thats just the way it is. Now what about those cute little Fur Seals???

Petey or PETA?

I look at things this way.. I'm the the top of the food chain.. My dog is a pet, it's my pet, I own it.. SUre I love it and treat it well but at thend of the day, it's an animal, there to give pleasure (not the way you're thinking you sicko [Wink] ) and when my dog gets sick, or too old and feeble.. well you know... have you seen "Ole Yella"?

So what the difference with horses.. same thing. If we didnt keep horses, should we not keep cats and dogs? should they be left in their own natural habitat only? What about zoos? what about bison? should we free the rest of the ones in farms so they can die out in about 6 months time?

Even if we did have the habitat to keep all of the animals.. Imagine Petey... Imagine all the animals living in a techniclour fantasy world.. do you think any of them ever die? Do you think that when the impala die, the lion comes and stands at it's bedside, reading the last rites and gently closing the eyelids?
You need to watch discovery channel a bit more. An animals life ends a lot more violently and horrificaly in the wild than it does in a captive and cared for environment.

I suspect you posted this a shit stir, because I think, despite your leftist views and the "role" you play on this site, you normally consider your posts a little more than you have here. Am I right?

It is just a business. Whether Petey realizes that is hard to say.

True story.

I used to know an elderly gentleman who died a few years ago. His hobby and post retirement business was breeding the rare and costly Chinese Sharpei dog. He owned two pedigree bitches with long championship lines. He would take orders and when he had enough, he would take one of the bitches to the owner of a championship stud and get the bitch bred. No payment for the stud fee until the litter was born.

The newly born puppies would be closely inspected for defects of any kind. Any found with such were immediately destroyed with a hypo of poison. The people who buy these puppies expect perfection and won't settle for anything less. After weaning, the new owners would come to the kennel and pick up their new dogs. He told me that the going rate back then was $10,000 for an AKC registered full pedigree championship caliber puppy.

Any unsold puppies were then poisoned. The Sharpei is rare and by keeping the supply low and the demand high, the price was maintained. Sounds cold blooded to me, but I understand why. The breeder told me that he learned the business from his mother and the one lesson never to be forgotten was that you never become attached to the dogs. You take extra special care of them because they make you money but you can't afford to be anything but detached.

So it is with any animal breeding venture for profit.

And so it goes.

OK...about the Fur Seals, seeing as though you are our self proclaimed Animal Liberationist, I thought you of all people would have had something to say about them, but it looks like I will have to "digress".

What are these margins you keep talking about, cos I live in a house, not a margin

Let me ask you a question.

Do you enjoy doing things that involve an amount of risk. Rock climbing, Mountain Biking, Snow skiing? etc....

If you had ever spent some time around thoroughbreds and training horses you would know that most of the horses out there literally chomp at the bit to run. Some of them not only want to run....but BEAT the competition.

How the fuck would I know? I know and have friends that own, train or treat (vets) Tbreds. You can find my ass at the track on the weekends during the summer.

By running, the horses run risks of injury....just as you might with an outdoor activity. Its not like the jockeys arent running risks too.

Fuck harness racing. That shit is for pussies.

Crack whores luv crack and would do crack 24/7...so does that mean we should allow them do do the crack?

At what point to you excercise intelligent control over something you have both control and informed opinion?

Horses luv to run...great...let them run. What God-given right does humanity have in controlling that desire to make some type of profit for some ignoramus who doesn't know the difference between equanine and Mr Ed?

These owners want money

They kill horses to get it

I happen to not agree with that philosophy

Petey,
Thats not a great argument.... It's true that unless you (or I) are total anarchists, that at some point, most people believe there should be some laws... Then we can all debate where the lines in the sand are drawn. Gun control, euthanasia, alcohol, tobacco etc... I think saying that loving horse racing is like loving crack is a bit far fetched. I respect your right to your opinion, and I respect the fact you are wrong here [Razz] but I wont shoot you.. I promise.. [Big Grin]

Genesis 1:26-28

26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

What I am saying is that it simply is not right to breed world class horses to race and then feign stupidity when they are maimed during the process.

I am not saying betting on horse racing is stupid

I am not saying it is horse racing is unGodly

I AM saying that it is a farce for anyone who participates in this so called sport, to feign ignorance or walk away from responsibility for a needless animal death.

Lets put this another way, perhaps there should be some type of maintenence fee attached to the bets AND to an entrance fee, which shall be charged with the providing of care for the animals AFTER the race career is over. Now how many owners and perspective bettors would go with that?

I think your answer to this moral diliemma resides in your answer to that question.

And an aside to Rickey Lake;

Please save the bible quotes for the minority of the Christians who choose to have the bible interpeted to them by the pontificating few.
