He used to attend gun shows at the Showplace in Richmond. He would sit in his wheelchair in the booth of a friend.
He would autograph books, but it was hard to engage him in conversation. I spoke to him several times and he would usually nod, but conversation was difficult. Some thought him to be standoffish.
I attributed his demeanor to that of an extremely modest person in a lot of pain. We will miss him.
The fame around his accomplishments launched an industry of ghillie suits and expensive rifles and scopes.

I am proud to say that I met Gunny Hathcock in 1990 at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was the guest of honor for the Staff Non-Commissioned Officers Career Course, Mess Night. Even with his physical and mental disabilities, he electrified the audience during his speech and throughout the evening was gracious to a fault. He considered himself a Marine and a shooter but not a hero even though he suffered terrible burns from pulling Marines from a burning Amtrac not to mention his record as a Marine sniper. Being a firearms enthusiast and with an infantry background, I was fortunate to be able to talk with him for all too short of a time about guns and shooting, an evening I will never forget. His gift from the class was a beautiful wood Cigar box with a white feather sealed in the glass top.
My signed copy of “Marine Sniper” and the picture I have of my sitting with him are among my most treasured memento’s, to me he was truly a hero.
